With the recent introduction of chip-based identity cards in 2020, driver's licenses began to be phased out. The new system is touted as more secure and nearly impossible to replicate due its integrated near-field communications (NFC) microchip, which stores everything from your fingerprints to your medical history. However, in order for this technology to work seamlessly in every situation, it requires the installation of a near-field communication reader at each location where identification is required.The cost of updating all these systems has resulted in some countries hesitating over whether or not they want to move forward with NFC IDs just yet. This reluctance is reflected in the fact that only a handful of countries, including Malaysia and Estonia, have introduced the new system. In order for this technology to be viable on a global scale, all member states of the United Nations will have to adopt it.In addition to NFC IDs being a bit cost prohibitive at the moment, there is another reason why most countries are holding off on adopting them: their reliance on a centralized database for storage. All that information is held in a single location – which is then vulnerable to attacks from hackers or governments – and if that database goes down or becomes corrupted, all those people's identities are gone as well. Hence, if we can develop a system that is more decentralized and less susceptible to this kind of cyberattack, we will be able to deploy the new technology at a much faster rate.This research looks at two methods by which we can build the decentralized system:

The first method is what I propose as the simplest and most efficient way to develop a decentralized system. This model works based on the idea that each driver's license scan only needs to be read once every 10 years for validation purposes. As such, no centralized database or any other form of electronic storage is required as well as no server access. From a technical standpoint, this system is very simple – all that's needed is a license reader with a built-in camera, a microcontroller and some micro-batteries. In order to read the license scan once every ten years, the device would only need to be turned on for about five seconds at each scanning location.The reader would also need to have an on-board button for the user to press. This button would initiate a random timer of between 10 and 15 minutes. After this random timer has elapsed, the on-board LED on the reader will flash red for 5 seconds and then turn off. This would signify to the user that he/she needs to turn their license reader on again in order for another scan. If the users fail to check their license after 10 years, the on-board LED on their license will flash green 5 seconds and then turn off. This would prevent any future scans from being initiated for 10 years. While this is by far the easiest and simplest method to implement, it does have a few drawbacks as well. The first drawback is that this system relies on a group of people willing to carry around a device that can be easily lost or broken – hence I propose an option for this to be implemented as part of the driver's licenses themselves.
